Installation Help - Windows Error Message

My Windows license isn't working — what now?

We're sorry to hear your Windows license isn't working! In most cases, the problem is n't with the license , but with computer settings, outdated software, or Microsoft activation servers that are temporarily unavailable.

Don't worry! With the steps below, you can usually fix this within a few minutes.

Step 1: Check if Windows is up to date

Make sure the latest updates are installed. Windows licenses work best on a fully updated version.

How to check for updates:

  1. Click Start
  2. Open Settings
  3. Go to Windows Update
  4. Install available updates

Step 2: Check whether your Windows version matches your license

A Windows Home license doesn't work on Windows Pro . Licenses also don't work on Windows N versions .

For example: If you bought a Windows 10 Pro license but your PC has Windows 10 Home installed, the code won't work.

How to check your version:

  1. Click Start
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select System
  4. Click on Info

🚫 Are you using the wrong version?
You can re-download Windows for free from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/nl-nl/software-download

❗ Upgrade Information (Important)

🔹 OEM licenses cannot upgrade from Home → Pro
🔹 OEM licenses cannot upgrade from Windows 10 → Windows 11
➡ This is only possible with a Retail License .

If you still want to use your OEM license, you'll need to reinstall Windows with the correct version (Home or Pro).

Step 3: Use the 'Troubleshoot' button

At the bottom of the activation screen, you'll see Troubleshooting . Windows will then automatically check for error messages and often resolve them immediately.

Step 4: Activate by phone (if automatic activation does not work)

Sometimes Windows can't connect to Microsoft servers. You'll then receive error codes or messages like "License already in use."

Then follow this method:

  1. Press Windows key + R
  2. Type: slui 4 → Enter
  3. Choose Netherlands
  4. Select Phone Activation
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions

Step 5: Windows forces old built-in license? (BIOS activation)

Some computers already have a built-in license from the factory. Therefore, a new license will not be accepted.

Manually force a new license:

  1. Press Windows key + R
  2. Type: cmd
  3. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER (admin mode)
  4. Type (replace XXXXX with your key): slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
  5. Press Enter
  6. Type: slmgr /ato
  7. Restart the computer
